WOBURN — Superintendent Matthew Crowley is pleased to share that Reeves Elementary School has officially opened its new inclusive playground.
On Sept. 18, Reeves Elementary School hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the newly renovated playground. The renovations were made possible through a federal grant from the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which is designed to support districts in educating children with disabilities
The renovated playground provides greater accessibility for students who use mobility devices, allowing them to use the equipment and play alongside their peers at recess. Students can now more easily access the swings, basketball court and play structure. The playground also includes equipment designed for students of varying abilities, including a crawl-climb ramp leading to a slide and smaller, easily accessible stand-alone play features.
Woburn Mayor Mike Concannon joined parents, students, teachers, and members of the district administration for the ceremony. Following the ribbon-cutting, students had the opportunity to explore the new playground and play alongside their classmates.
Through the grant, the district was also able to upgrade the Early Childhood Program (ECP) playground located at Reeves.
Assistant Superintendent Dr. Maureen Ryan spearheaded the grant process with DESE in an effort to make both playgrounds more inclusive to students with varying mobility needs.
“Having two playgrounds at Reeves Elementary that now meet the needs of all of our students is incredibly meaningful,” said Assistant Superintendent Ryan. “I would like to thank the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) for its support throughout this process. I look forward to seeing our students play, make friends and explore this new playground for years to come.”
