It’s Official: Mascoma Student-Athlete Barnaby Diehn Breaks State Discus Record

Mascoma Valley Regional High School’s Barnaby Diehn will head to college with a state record on his athletic resume.

On Monday, June 15, the New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association’s Outdoor Track and Field Committee affirmed Diehn as the new state record holder in the discus throw.

During a regional field events meet held at Mascoma on April 28, Diehn’s final toss in the discus flew 183 feet, 11 inches. The existing record, 179 feet, 5 inches, was set by Ryan Caswell of Merrimack Valley High School in 2002.

“Barnaby is one of the best throwers in the state and was a great competitor and team member all year,” Coach Rick Currier said. “Beating the state record by four and a half feet is something special.”

Diehn contributed significantly to strong performances by the Mascoma boys track and field team all season. He also won the shot put and discus at the Winnisquam meet on April 19 and placed first in discus and second in the shot put at the Black Bear Invitational Track and Field in Northwood on April 26.

Diehn also won in shot put and discus at the Division 3 State Meet and the Meet of Champions and competed in discus at Nike Outdoor Nationals on Sunday, June 21 in Eugene, Oregon.

Diehn has committed to attend Penn State in the fall.
