Burlington Police Department Celebrates Three Recent Promotions

BURLINGTON — Chief Thomas P. Browne and the Burlington Police Department are pleased to share that Lt. Thomas Carlson has been promoted to Captain, Sgt. William Trelegan has been promoted to Lieutenant, and Officer Daniel Main has been promoted to Sergeant.

Lt. Carlson, Sgt. Trelegan and Officer Main were officially sworn into their new positions during a ceremony on Monday, June 8.

Capt. Thomas Carlson 

Capt. Carlson has been a member of the Burlington Police Department for 22 years.

Capt. Carlson has served as a Field Training Commander, Police Academy Instructor, Patrol Lieutenant, and held many more leadership positions.

Throughout his career in Burlington, Capt. Carlson has received a number of commendations and recognitions for his dedication to service. Some notable achievements include his completion of the FBI-LEEDA Leadership Trilogy, multiple letters of commendation, the department’s 2007 Meritorious Award, and the department’s 2007 Traffic Enforcement Award.

He holds a Master of Science in Justice Studies from Southern New Hampshire University and a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Northeastern University. 

Lt. William Trelegan

Lt. Trelegan joined the Burlington Police Department in 2008 after serving with the Ayer Police Department and the University of Massachusetts Boston Police Department.

Lt. Trelegan has served as a Field Training Officer for more than two years and as an Assistant Accreditation Manager since 2021. 

Lt. Trelegan has displayed a commitment to leadership, having completed a number of trainings and certifications, such as Massachusetts Emergency Medical Technician, MPTC Front-Line Leadership, FBI-LEEDA Leadership Trilogy, Middlesex Crisis Intervention Training, and more.

He holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Massachusetts in Criminal Justice and a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Massachusetts.

Sgt. Daniel Main

Sgt. Main joined the department in 2018 after graduating from Wheelock College with a Bachelor of Science in Juvenile Justice and Math/Science.

He has been a member of the department’s NEMLEC SWAT team since 2023 and a drone unit pilot since 2019.

Sgt. Main has also received certifications in tactical leadership, front-line supervision, ALERRT Instructor, and MPTC Instructor.

“I am incredibly proud of the dedication, Capt. Carlson, Lt. Trelegan, and Sgt. Main have displayed throughout their time with the Burlington Police,” said Chief Browne. “These promotions reflect the commitment that the Burlington Police Department has to maintaining strong leadership.”
