WHITMAN — Fire Chief Timothy Clancy reports that the Whitman Fire Department battled a house fire early Wednesday morning.
Firefighters responded to 143 High St., a 2.5-story single-family home, shortly before 4:30 a.m. Fire was showing upon arrival, and the incident commander struck a second alarm response, bringing additional assets and mutual aid manpower to the scene.
The fire was brought under control after about 30 minutes. Four residents were home at the time and were able to evacuate the home as they were alerted by properly working smoke detectors throughout the home. The residents received support at the scene and will be making temporary housing arrangements. The house sustained significant fire and smoke damage.
Firefighters rescued one family cat from the dwelling. No residents or firefighters were injured.
The Whitman Police Department also responded to the scene. Mutual aid was provided by the Hanson, Abington, East Bridgewater, Rockland, and Brockton Fire Departments, and Norwell and Halifax EMS. The Pembroke Fire Department provided station coverage.
The origin and cause of the fire are under investigation by the Whitman Fire Department and the Massachusetts State Fire Marshal’s Office.
