WAKEFIELD — The Union Fire District of South Kingstown and mutual aid partners extinguished a fire in a single-family home on Saturday morning.
Firefighters attempted to rescue eight cats — three adults and five kittens. One adult cat did not survive, but another adult and the five kittens were taken to Ocean State Veterinary Specialists in East Greenwich for observation. One adult cat remained on the scene.
Two firefighters suffered minor injuries. One was treated at the scene and the other was transported to Kent Hospital in Warwick as a precaution.
On Saturday, June 6, at 11:10 a.m., the Union Fire District of South Kingstown was dispatched to 120 Meadow Tree Farm Road following a 911 call from a neighbor.
Firefighters arrived at the home to find heavy smoke and flames showing from the exterior. Three residents made it out safely on their own and were uninjured.
Fire crews made a quick attack on the fire but were hampered by the lack of hydrants in the area. Union Fire District called the regional Tanker Task Force to the scene.
Multiple mutual aid partners responded to the scene, including Kingston Fire District, North Kingstown Fire Department, Narragansett Fire Department, Charlestown Fire District, Richmond-Carolina Fire District, Exeter Fire Department and Hope Valley Fire District.
South Kingstown Police assisted, and South Kingstown Emergency Medical Services (SKEMS) responded to the scene. SKEMS called in additional EMS crews from East Greenwich Fire Department, Exeter Rescue and Hope Valley Rescue.
The home sustained serious fire and smoke damage and was deemed uninhabitable. The American Red Cross responded to the scene to render aid to the displaced residents. Neighbors and family at the scene also offered assistance.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Union Fire District Fire Marshal and the Rhode Island State Fire Marshal’s Office.
“We faced several challenges as we fought this fire,” said Union Fire District Chief Steven Pinch. “This was a hot day to gear up and enter a burning home, and we had a hard time getting water to the scene. My thoughts are with our two injured firefighters. I’d like to thank the departments that responded to this scene; it was an incredible mutual aid response. The coordinated support helped us all to avoid additional injuries.”
