NEWPORT — The Newport Police Department is warning residents about a recent phone scam that has been targeting community members.
The incidents begin with fraudulent claims involving Amazon accounts and bank cards. When the initial attempt was unsuccessful, the scammer tried to contact residents from what appeared to be the police department’s phone number, claiming to be a member of the department.
The department is currently investigating these calls and has linked the phone number to previous scam activity.
The Newport Police Department would like to share the following safety tips regarding phone scams:
- Never share personal information over the phone.
- Never respond to unknown phone numbers.
- Don’t click on any hyperlinks.
- Report and block numbers that appear to be scams.
If you suspect you have been a victim of a scam, please call the department at 802-334-6733.
