Mascoma High School Student Wins 2nd District Congressional Art Competition

Mascoma Regional High School student Audrey Webber’s artistic vision and talent will be on display in the U.S. Capitol for the next year.

Audrey’s work has been selected as the winner of the Congressional Art

Competition for the 2nd Congressional District. U.S. Rep. Maggie Goodlander announced Audrey as the winner at a ceremony at Kimball Jenkins School of Art in Concord on Monday, May 4.

Her artwork will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol, alongside other winning art from students around the country. Audrey will be provided with round-trip airfare to attend the awards ceremony at the Capitol in June, featuring a visit to Goodlander’s office.

Audrey’s acrylic work — referred to as “Cows” at the school — reflects her mountain childhood home.

“The yellow and blue sky is unique and gorgeous, the sun falling behind the mountains, casting light on the backs of the cows,” Audrey said. “The feeling I tried to convey is tranquil with a dash of solemnity.”

Audrey credits Mascoma art teacher Bess French as a mentor and inspiration and is grateful to French for recommending she enter this competition.

“I am absolutely thrilled that Audrey Webber’s painting has been selected as the District 2 winner for the Congressional Art Competition, French said. “I deeply appreciate Rep. Goodlander’s support of the arts and her recognition of student creativity. This is a massive honor for Audrey and a proud moment for our entire school community.

“Seeing her talent celebrated at this level reflects the continued growth and energy of the visual arts program at Mascoma High School. While this is only our second year participating in the competition, Audrey’s success highlights the incredible creativity, dedication, and artistic talent of our students. The fact that Audrey is considering art education as a career makes this moment especially meaningful to me,” French said.

The winning artwork also will be featured on the House of Representatives’ Congressional Art Competition page.

“When I was honored with winning the Congressional Art Competition, it wasn’t 18-year-old Audrey making an incoherent speech to a crowd of fellow artists; it was the 9-year-old Audrey who begged her sister to teach her how to draw,” Audrey said.

Rep. Goodlander also recognized Mascoma students August Abbott and Storm Budzyn for their strong entries.

Rep. Goodlander hopes to visit Mascoma later this month.
