TOWNSEND — The North Middlesex Regional School District has partnered with the Townsend Police Department and Pepperell Police and Fire Departments to host a realistic mock crash aimed at educating students about the dangers of impaired and distracted driving.
The mock crash took place on Sunday, April 19, behind North Middlesex Regional High School. The demonstration transformed the roadway into the scene of a serious motor vehicle accident, with North Middlesex drama students portraying the driver and involved passengers.
During the event, first responders from Townsend and Pepperell conducted a full emergency response. This included extracting occupants from the vehicle, administering medical care and investigating the crash. The scenario resulted in the arrest and booking of the “suspect,” an impaired driver, illustrating the consequences of dangerous driving.
North Middlesex students filmed and are in the process of editing the demonstration into a video that will be shown to students at the high school on April 28. The video is intended to provide a lasting educational resource to promote safe driving practices among students.
The mock crash was supported by Harbor Auto Body, a local Townsend business, which provided and transported the wrecked vehicle used in the simulation.
“We have created an experience that goes beyond a warning and becomes something students will remember,” said Principal Laurie Smith. “Our hope is that this demonstration helps students understand the realities of distracted and impaired driving before they ever get behind the wheel.”
“We hope students walk away from this understanding that impaired or distracted driving is not just illegal, it’s life-altering,” said Townsend Police Chief James Sartell. “Our priority is prevention, and education like this is one of the most effective tools we can utilize.”
The collaboration between the school district, public safety agencies, and local business partners hopes to create a memorable and impactful learning experience that encourages students to make safe, responsible choices.
