Union Fire District of South Kingstown Extinguishes Fire in Home and Provides Medical Treatment to Three Injured Residents

WAKEFIELD — The Union Fire District of South Kingstown and mutual aid partners provided medical treatment to three injured residents and extinguished a fire in a single-family home on Sunday morning.

WAKEFIELD — The Union Fire District of South Kingstown and mutual aid partners provided medical treatment to three injured residents and extinguished a fire in a single-family home on Sunday morning.

On Sunday, March 8, at 7:10 a.m., the Union Fire District of South Kingstown was called to 153 Highland Ave., by a 911 call reporting a fire in the basement. 

Firefighters arrived at the home to find heavy smoke showing, and three residents who were suffering from smoke inhalation and other injuries. Firefighters provided immediate medical treatment before South Kingstown EMS and Narragansett Fire Ambulance transported the residents to a local hospital. One of the residents was later transferred to Rhode Island Hospital. 

Firefighters attacked the fire by stretching two hose lines into the home to attack fire in the basement and on the first floor. It took about 30 minutes to bring the fire under control. 

The home suffered fire damage to the first floor and basement, and smoke damage throughout. The residents will be displaced. The Red Cross was notified to provide assistance. 

Firefighters from Kingston provided mutual aid at the scene, working cohesively with Union Fire District of South Kingstown firefighters. 

The cause remains under investigation by the Union Fire District Fire Marshal and the Rhode Island State Fire Marshal’s Office.

“Our thoughts are with the three residents who were injured by this fire,” said Chief Steven Pinch. “I want to thank our mutual aid companies for their support and teamwork, and I want to thank our firefighters for working effectively to provide first aid while simultaneously battling this fire.”
