SPRINGFIELD — The upcoming Pulitzer Electric Aircraft Race will highlight the rapid progress of electric aviation and the people helping lead that transformation — including BETA Technologies Human Factors Lead and pilot Tyler Prather.
Prather joined BETA Technologies in March 2024 and has played a key role in integrating human factors into the company’s development and testing of next-generation electric aircraft. As a certified flight instructor, she also helps train fellow employees to fly BETA’s aircraft and serves as an ambassador for electric flight.
“At BETA, we believe that the best way to understand the technology is to experience it,” Prather said. “We make sure our team members have that opportunity — whether it’s through flight training, discovery flights, or our road shows that introduce the Alia aircraft to people across the country.”
More than half of BETA’s workforce participates in some form of flight training, a unique approach that blends engineering and pilot perspectives to strengthen aircraft design and safety. During road shows, Prather and her colleagues fly the Alia eCTOL to airports nationwide, where they meet with aviation professionals, students, and community members interested in the future of sustainable flight.
Before joining BETA, Prather worked at Boeing in Seattle on the 737 MAX program, but she was drawn to the opportunity to make a more direct impact on the future of aviation.
“Electric and sustainable aviation represent the most exciting leap forward in our industry,” Prather said. “Being part of a company that’s actively shaping that future — and now flying in a race that’s making history — is incredibly meaningful.”
Prather will pilot BETA’s Alia eCTOL in the Pulitzer Electric Aircraft Race, which will bring together pioneering pilots and cutting-edge electric aircraft for the world’s first crewed all-electric air race. The event, organized by the Advanced Air Mobility Institute and the National Advanced Air Mobility Center of Excellence, will take place Oct. 10-15 at Springfield-Beckley Municipal Airport.
The race will feature three aircraft across five teams, including two Pipistrel Velis Electros from Lincoln Park Aviation and one BETA Technologies Alia eCTOL.
The competition aims to showcase the capabilities of all-electric aircraft while helping the public see, touch, and experience this emerging technology firsthand.
