WAYLAND — Chief Neil McPherson is pleased to share that Wayland Firefighter/Paramedic Ryan Murphy recently completed training and graduated from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy (MFA) Career Recruit Program.

Firefighter/Paramedic Murphy, who is originally from Southborough, joined the Department in January 2025, after working for Brewster Ambulance Service as an EMT.

Over the course of the 10-week program, students received extensive classroom training in all basic firefighter skills, practicing under non-fire conditions and during controlled fire conditions. Graduates needed to demonstrate proficiency in life safety, search and rescue, ladder operations, water supply, pump operation, and fire attack, ranging from mailbox fires to multi-floor structural fires.

Firefighter/Paramedic Murphy has also completed a variety of Advanced Life Support (ALS) trainings and certifications, including Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support Training (ACLS), and the Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition and Stabilization (PEARS) Provider Certification.

Before Murphy joined the public safety service he started his own barber business, often cutting the hair of New England Patriots staff and players.

“Firefighter/Paramedic Murphy goes above and beyond for his community. His commitment and passion for service make him an excellent addition to our department,” said Chief McPherson. “The department would like to congratulate him on completing the academy, and we look forward to watching Murphy continue to grow here in Wayland.”
