MEDFIELD — Superintendent Jeffrey Marsden and DECA Advisor Karen Shaffer are proud to recognize 10 Medfield High School (MHS) students who showcased their business acumen and leadership skills at the prestigious DECA International Career Development Conference (ICDC).

“Their dedication and hard work leading up to this event were truly commendable,” said Superintendent Marsden. “Their competition on the international stage is a testament to their talent and the strength of our DECA program.”

DECA ICDC spotlights DECA’s top student performers and leaders from all 50 United States, plus Brazil, Canada, China, the Dominican Republic, Germany, Ghana, Guam, India, Mexico, Poland, Puerto Rico, Slovakia, Spain and Vietnam. It also highlights dozens of innovative business partnerships and universities that empower these emerging student leaders and entrepreneurs to tackle the challenges of an increasingly complex economic landscape.

This year’s ICDC took place in Orlando, Florida, from April 26-29.

“It’s phenomenal how our DECA students develop their critical thinking, creative strategy and presentation skills throughout the DECA season,” said DECA Adviser Shaffer. “We are proud of their commitment to excellence and their terrific ability to design and pitch various solutions. It’s noteworthy that seniors Eva LaRowe and Claire Teany made it to ICDC for a record third time and junior Sam George competed for his second time while also transitioning to his recently elected role on MASS DECA’s student state leadership team. Our Medfield ICDC team was led by wonderful MHS teachers Ms. Kerry Lynch and Ms. Catherine Olson.”

Amidst the recognition of these students, the Medfield community also grieves the recent death of Eva LaRowe, who mentored and trained so many students in DECA, theater, a cappella singing and her classes. Her unwavering energy and kindness are sewn into the fabric of the hearts Medfield’s DECA members and will always remain a part of the MHS family.

Beyond putting their talents to the test, DECA ICDC provides students with invaluable opportunities to network with peers and participate in workshops, seminars, and leadership development activities designed to enhance their skills and prepare them for future success. This year, Medfield High School had over 200 students compete in DECA.

In DECA, students compete in various roleplay, scenario-based events, or create and present written projects or a broad range of campaigns. Over 50 competitive event options are available to students, allowing them to compete within their chosen interests: management, human resources, marketing, finance, tourism, sports, restaurants, entertainment, franchises or entrepreneurship. Students work through their role-plays or present their projects in front of industry professional judges.
