City of Newburyport Announces Departure of Director of Public Services Wayne S. Amaral

NEWBURYPORT — The City of Newburyport announces that Director of Public Services Wayne S. Amaral will be stepping down at the end of June after two years of dedicated service.

Amaral was appointed by Mayor Sean Reardon in 2023. He previously served as Deputy Director of the Department of Public Services from 2014- 2018.

“Wayne has been an invaluable asset to our community. Under Wayne’s leadership DPS made significant progress to the City’s infrastructure. He oversaw the implementation of the Street and Sidewalks plan, with an attention to increasing pedestrian safety. He also guided our Water Division and Sewer Division’s efforts to improve resiliency,” Mayor Sean Reardon said.

In his resignation letter, Amaral wrote, “My two-plus years here in Newburyport has been an amazing experience working around such a strong DPS team of hard-working and dedicated individuals. My staff has allowed me to succeed, and I am very proud to have worked alongside every one of them. The support I have also received from many residents, the Mayor, and City Council members allowed me to lead the Department into the future.”

“I am tremendously grateful for his leadership,” Mayor Reardon said. “He has a unique ability to connect with residents to overcome challenges with a positive attitude and empathy. He fostered a collaborative culture at DPS that has enabled our City to prepare for future capital projects.”

Amaral has been appointed as Director of Public Works in another municipality but will stay with the City until the end of June.

“The experience I received working for the City of Newburyport has given me the tools to grow and seek greater opportunities that will better align with my future ambitions as I come to the end of my career,” said Amaral.

The City will continue with planned infrastructure improvements. The DPS remains committed to improving and maintaining the City’s infrastructure during this transition. More information about the transition process will be made available in the coming weeks.
