Georgetown Fire Receives $19,343.37 in Grants from State Firefighter Safety Equipment Grant Program

GEORGETOWN — Chief Matt McKay is pleased to share that the Georgetown Fire Department received two grants totaling $19,343.37 from the State Firefighter Safety Equipment Grant Program.

Georgetown Fire received $15,949.88 and $3,484.49 in two grants from the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security and the Department of Fire Services from the Firefighter Safety Equipment Grant Program, which will be used to purchase new equipment.

The $15,949.88 grant was awarded to the department in January and will be used to purchase three sets of turnout gear, including helmets, gloves and boots, and a combustible 4-gas meter. The gas meter will be used to monitor carbon monoxide, oxygen, and other combustible gases while responding to a variety of calls.

The $3,484.49 grant was awarded to the department on April 7 and will be used to purchase structural equipment, including boots and gloves, hoods, and SCBA facemasks. The funding will also be used to purchase electric vehicle emergency plugs, which act as an electric vehicle disabler, preventing an electric vehicle from accidentally starting or moving in the event of an emergency.

The Firefighter Safety Equipment Grant program provides reimbursement on purchases of 135 different types of eligible equipment. In many cases, the purchase of this equipment will help departments attain compliance with the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) or National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) safety standards.

“We would like to thank the Department of Fire Services and the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security for awarding us this funding, which will allow us to purchase much needed equipment and gear for our members,” said Chief McKay. “We are extremely grateful to receive this funding. This new equipment will provide us with the necessary tools for responding to calls and keeping our community safe.”
