LUDLOW — Chief Ryan Pease reports that the Ludlow Fire Department responded to and extinguished a fire in a two-story building.
On Saturday, April 5, at approximately 11:04 a.m., Ludlow Fire was dispatched to 274/276 East St. for reports of a fire in the rear of the commercial/residential building. It also was reported that occupants may be unable to exit.
Upon arrival, crews observed smoke and fire coming from the second-floor porch. First-arriving companies, with assistance from Ludlow Police, quickly determined that occupants were out of the building before they arrived.
Crews were able to quickly knock down the flames, preventing further damage or extension.
Mutual aid was provided by the Wilbraham and Westover Fire Departments. Station coverage was provided by off-duty Ludlow firefighters.
One person was transported to the hospital with what is believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.
The cause of the fire was under investigation by Ludlow Fire and determined to be accidental due to a failure of a smokehouse ventilation pipe.
