Town Administrator Marc Strange is excited to invite residents to an open public meeting on Monday, April 22, at 6 p.m., in the Board of Selectmen Conference Room at Town Hall. This gathering is a crucial step in the redevelopment of Whitney Park, as the Town has enlisted the expertise of Tighe & Bond for the park’s conceptual design.
Recent feedback from community stakeholders has highlighted several vital considerations for Whitney Park’s redesign. These insights, gathered during the committee meeting on Feb. 20, underscore the importance of community involvement in shaping the park to meet diverse needs.
Key Feedback Highlights:
- Summer Camp and Parking: The need for increased parking is clear, with an average of 160 campers and 29 staff. An additional 30-50 spaces would better serve both summer camp needs and athletic events.
- Before/After School Program: A safe, accessible drop-off point for children attending before/after school programs has been emphasized, with a preference for locations closer to the building.
- Logistics: Enhancements to park access, including Department of Public Works access from Highland Place and the relocation of the Butler building’s dumpster, are under consideration.
- Programming: The community has expressed a desire for diverse recreational options, including maintaining a basketball court, adding a multi-use court and introducing at least three pickleball courts. The possible separation of sports and playground areas has also been positively noted.
“As we move forward with the conceptual design for Whitney Park, we are eager to incorporate more community feedback,” Town Administrator Strange said. “This meeting will allow residents to voice their ideas and preferences, helping us create a park that reflects our community’s values and needs.”
