Medfield Public Schools Shares Results of Spring 2023 MCAS Testing

MEDFIELD – Superintendent Jeffrey J. Marsden and Director of Instruction and Innovation Dr. Christine Power wish to share the results of the Spring 2023 MCAS testing and highlight areas of excellence throughout Medfield Public Schools.

Students across the state take MCAS (Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System tests each spring in English Language Arts, mathematics, and in certain grades science and technology/engineering. Testing allows parents to check their child’s progress, while providing important data that informs a school district’s decision-making.

Medfield students excelled in a number of grade levels and subjects. Medfield students’ performance was ranked among the top 10 districts among 300 districts in the state in Grade 3 ELA (sixth), Grade 3 Math (fifth), Grade 4 Math (fourth), Grade 5 ELA (ninth), Grade 7 ELA (eighth), Grade 8 Science and Technology/Engineering (10th), and Grade 10 Science and Technology/Engineering (third).

Overall test scores have generally returned to 2019, pre-COVID-19 levels.

“You hear a lot in the media about learning loss due to the pandemic. Our teachers, in partnership with families, did a fantastic job making sure students were working hard and focused,”  said Superintendent Marsden. ” We always have room for improvement, but we’ve come out of COVID-19 better than most.”

The district also credits efforts to provide additional supports and services to ensure high-risk students did not fall behind their peers.

“Last year, and really this year, teachers have gained a feeling of normalcy,” Dr. Power said. “These scores show how far we have come.”

The District will use test results to determine areas of strength, as well as shape grade level and department goals to improve curriculum and instruction.
