NORWOOD — General Manager Tony Mazzucco is pleased to announce that Planning and Economic Development Director Paul Halkiotis was recently recognized with a Public Service Award by the Neponset River Watershed Association.

Halkiotis has served as the Planning and Economic Development director in Norwood since 2014.

During his time with the town, he has led Norwood to become the first watershed town to complete the state’s Municipal Vulnerability Planning process for climate adaptation and has helped plan park improvements for riverfront land in the environmental justice neighborhood of South Norwood. He has also worked to update local stormwater management rules to prevent polluted runoff and pursued the removal of an obsolete dam in order to prevent flooding and improve the habitat for native trout.

“It’s always great to see Norwood’s municipal employees recognized for their outstanding public service efforts,” said General Manager Mazzucco. “I would like to congratulate Paul on this award and thank him for his continued work to better our environment. I look forward to seeing what we can do in the future to continue to transform our community for the better.”

Halkiotis previously worked as the town planner for the towns of Tewksbury, Orleans and Marshfield, as well as the economic development planner in Weymouth.

The Neponset River Watershed Association is a member-supported conservation group that began in 1967. The goal of the organization is to clean up and protect the Neponset River, its tributaries and the surrounding watershed lands.

Halkiotis was honored with the award at the organization’s virtual annual meeting on Sunday, May 2.
