BRAINTREE — Mayor Charles C. Kokoros and Deputy Chief Michael Want will brief the media Monday afternoon regarding Friday’s shooting at the South Shore Plaza as well as possible security enhancements at the mall.

Officials from the Braintree Police Department and Town of Braintree met with Simon officials, the parent company of the South Shore Plaza, to discuss current security measures at the mall and how those security measures may be enhanced.
While the meeting had been previously planned prior to last week as part of the existing partnership between the town and the mall, the shooting that took place inside the mall on Friday, July 3 was a major topic of discussion.
Braintree Police responded alongside numerous mutual aid partners to the South Shore Plaza on Granite Street at 4:43 p.m. Friday following a report of a shooting. A 15-year-old female sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the shooting.
The mall was placed on temporary lock-down and stores locked and closed their gates and doors when the lock-down went into effect. Those in the surrounding neighborhoods were asked to shelter-in-place immediately following the incident while police searched for suspects. Police located two male suspects on Granite Street near the mall shortly after the incident occurred. A gun was also located by police in bushes outside the plaza. One male suspect was charged and the second male suspect was released from police custody.
Police and fire cleared the building of patrons and employees Friday night. The South Shore Plaza reopened for business at its normal business hours Saturday.
