*UPDATE* Newburyport Police and Fire Departments Respond to Gas Leak on Low Street
The following reflects an update to the ongoing gas leak on Low Street.
NEWBURYPORT — Fire Chief Christopher LeClaire and City Marshal Mark Murray report that both Newburyport police and fire departments are currently responding to a gas leak on Low Street.
At approximately 10:30 a.m., Newburyport Police and Fire responded to reports of a gas leak on Low Street. Upon arrival, officials discovered that a construction worker operating heavy machinery had struck a gas line.
Two homes have been evacuated as a result of the incident. Any staff members working at Rupert A. Nock Middle School (70 Low St.) have been advised to shelter in place out of an abundance of caution.
National Grid crews are on scene, working to isolate and shut off the leak.
Officials on scene say that the leak may take up to four more hours to secure.
More information will be provided as it becomes available.
