Bedford Fire Department Battles Outside Fire that Spread to Duplex Home

BEDFORD – Fire Chief David Grunes reports that the Bedford Fire Department battled a fire that began outside but soon spread to the exterior facade of a duplex home yesterday. Firefighters, making an aggressive attack, were able to extinguish the fire and spare the home from significant damage.

Firefighters from Bedford and Hanscom Air Force Base responded at 11:43 a.m. to 6-8 Fayette Road and arrived within three minutes of the initial call.

As firefighters arrived, the fire had already begun to spread and threaten the home. There were three residents asleep inside at the time and firefighters forced entry and assisted with their evacuation.

Firefighters quickly attacked and extinguished the fire. There was minor damage to the outside of the building, and the house had to ventilated because some smoke had made its way inside. However, Chief Grunes estimated damage at less than $10,000.

“This is an example of what happens when firefighters arrive quickly and make an aggressive and efficient attack on a fire scene,” Chief Grunes said. “Thankfully, our firefighters were able to prevent any significant damage to this duplex, which means that two families are not left homeless in our community today. Our firefighters did a great job and should be very proud of their actions.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but a preliminary investigation points to careless disposal of smoking materials.
