Arlington Police Charge Contractor with Conning Woman out of $10,000
ARLINGTON — Police Chief Frederick Ryan reports that the Arlington Police Department arrested an allegedly unscrupulous contractor today and charged him with conning an Boston woman out of $10,000.
RONALD GEORGE MATRANGA, AGE 31, OF MELROSE was arrested on Tuesday and charged with Attempting to Commit Larceny by False Pretense.
MATRANGA was allegedly providing home remodeling work for an 83-year-old Boston woman recently and pressed her to deposit $10,000 into an account for him at a bank in Arlington. Today, when he drove her again to the bank to withdraw the money, the bank sent up an alert, and Arlington Police were notified.
The $10,000 is completely unrelated to any alleged contracting work the suspect may have been doing for the victim.
MATRANGA allegedly also drove the victim to the bank yesterday to make the transfer. Arlington Police believe he is working with an accomplice, and additional charges are pending against him and the other person.
After his arrest, police found numerous pieces of jewelry, silver, and other valuables in the suspect’s vehicle and investigators are trying to determine the origin of this property. Anyone who may have been victimized by the suspect is asked to call the Arlington Police Department.
MATRANGA, who is on probation for unrelated heroin charges, is being held pending arraignment tomorrow in Cambridge District Court.
“We allege that a contractor acted malevolently, attempting to gain the confidence of an elderly resident for the purposes of stealing money from her,” Chief Ryan said. “I want to give credit to the bank for noticing these activities and to our Arlington Police Officers for quickly noticing the discrepancies and acting quickly.”
These are allegations. All suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty.
