White Powder Triggers HAZMAT Response at Littleton Police Department

LITTLETON — Police Chief Matthew J. King reports that a business owner received a threatening letter this afternoon, containing what he believed to be white powder. The business owner brought the letter to the Littleton Police Department, triggering an evacuation of the police department and a State Tier 1 Hazardous Materials Response, which is ongoing at this hour.

The owner of the ProChem company on Great Road received a threatening letter today containing what he believed was a white powder inside the envelope. He brought the letter to the Littleton Police Department headquarters at 4:25 p.m. Tuesday and was immediately advised to exit the building.

The incident triggered a lockdown of the police department and the Littleton Fire Department was brought in. Fire Chief Scott Wodzinski ordered a Tier 2 regional HAZMAT response. Two police department employees and the business owner have been isolated out of an abundance of caution.

“At this time, we have no reason to fear any contamination or danger to the public, but we have good procedures in place and are following them to the letter,” Chief King said. “We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but we take situations like this very seriously.”

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is also on scene. The Littleton Police Department will provide more details as they become available.
