Pepperell Police Department Receives $10,000 Facilities Grant to Help Maintain Newly Remediated Police Station

PEPPERELL — Police Chief David Scott announces that the Pepperell Police Department has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Massachusetts Interlocal Insurance Association (MIIA) to complete a needs assessment for the facility maintenance of their police station.

Also included in the funding is the creation of standard operating procedures and management controls for the building’s maintenance.

“We had a serious mold issue in our building, which kept us out of our police station for several months,” Chief Scott said. “If we can prevent it from coming back or at least delay it, then we need to do that. This grant is going to allow us to have on paper exactly what we need to do to keep this building as healthy as possible for our employees and the public.”

Chief Scott applied for the grant and looks forward to the results of the study.

Mold on the walls of Scott’s office and other places throughout the police department building at 59 Main St. was tested about a year ago. After testing and pleas for funding, employees were moved into two temporary trailers in the front parking lot in March. They finally returned to the building last week after seven months in the trailers.

“The town spent more than $200,000 for this mold remediation project. We want to protect that investment as long as we can,” Chief Scott said. “Deferred maintenance due to financial constraints is what got us in this situation. This study will tell us what we need to do. As I understand it, it is quite detailed. It will guide our custodian throughout his work week, hour by hour. Hopefully we can afford to implement all of the suggestions.”

The studies, to be performed by Likkar Maintenance Systems of Foxborough, will develop a regular maintenance program per industry standards for the town’s custodian to follow to keep the building clean and as healthy as possible.

This is the second time Pepperell Police have been given a MIIA Risk Management Grant. In 2011, the Department was awarded $10,000 to install an audio/video surveillance system in the station. The Department and Chief Scott appreciate the opportunity to apply for such funding.

“This is certainly something we could not afford on our own,” Chief Scott said. “We’d like to thank those on the grant review committee at MIIA.”
