Ipswich Police Department Announces Second Lightning Strike Victim Has Died

IPSWICH – Acting Police Chief Jonathan Hubbard sadly announces that the second lightning strike victim in the September 6 storms that swept into town has died.

Marianne Mellnick, age 69, of Concord, Mass. died on Saturday, September 13, at Massachusetts General Hospital.

“This is a terrible tragedy that has struck our community, and I join the Ipswich Police and Fire Departments and the entire town in offering our most sincere condolences to the Mellnick family,” Acting Chief Hubbard said.

One point of clarification: Further investigation and interviews with witnesses has shown that the victims were NOT swimming when they were struck by lightning but were walking up the beach, toward the street.
