Boxborough Police Department Reminder: Schools Open September 3

State Law — Stop For School Buses

BOXBOROUGH — Police Chief Warren B. Ryder and the Boxborough Police Department wish to remind residents that schools open for the year on Wednesday, September 3. Please allow extra time in your morning and afternoon travels about town, as buses will be on the roads and kids will be crossing the streets.

“We ask all motorists to please be patient,” Chief Ryder said. “There will be increased traffic on the roads and school buses will be picking up children in the morning and dropping them off in the afternoon. We want everyone to have a safe opening week, and we will be visible in town, making sure everything goes smoothly.”

The Boxborough Police Department will be conducting extra patrols on bus routes and in the school zone during opening week. These patrols will be primarily focusing on speeding enforcement in the school zone, failure to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks and unsafe passing of school buses.

“Our primary goal is to ensure that children get to and from school safely,” said Sergeant Brett Pelley. “We want to educate motorists to be on the lookout and to take it safe. We will be out there, enforcing the law, to keep kids safe.”

REMINDERS:

• State law requires motorists to stop for school buses and school vans when the red lights are flashing. Be on the lookout for flashing yellow and red lights, and be ready to stop.
• The speed limit on Massachusetts Avenue is 20 mph when the school zone signs are activated.

The Boxborough Police Department will issue fines and citations for motorists who fail to obey these two rules.
