Maynard Fire Department Responds to Hazardous Materials Incident
One Worker Sickened by Chemical Spill Odor
MAYNARD — Maynard Fire Chief Anthony Stowers announces that the Maynard Fire Department today responded to a hazardous materials incident that left one worker ill.
The fire department was dispatched to 63 Great Road at 1:30 p.m., and entered the multi-use building in full protective gear, including self-contained breathing apparatus. Firefighters took readings with a multi-gas air monitoring meter and found high concentrations of an undetermined substance.
The investigation revealed that the odor was coming from a spill that had occurred earlier in the day from Crosslink Genetics Corporation, one of multiple businesses located in the building.
A regional team, the Massachusetts District 3 Hazardous Materials Team, was dispatched. With their approval, the building was ventilated by members of the Maynard Fire Department and was deemed safe for employees to re-enter at approximately 4:50 p.m. The building was turned back over to the property representative and all units were cleared.
The worker who felt ill was evaluated by Emergency Medical Services but refused treatment or transport to a hospital.
The Maynard Fire Department and the Maynard Board of Health will be working with the business owner to correct and issues present and to prevent further occurrences. At this time, there is no danger to building occupants or area residents from this event.
