GLOUCESTER — A police officer and eight firefighters are being commended for their teamwork and persistence to save the life of a resident who collapsed at his home.

On Monday, March 30, at approximately 8:15 p.m., the Gloucester Police and Fire Departments responded to a 911 call reporting that a 39-year-old man collapsed in his home on Cherry Street and was unresponsive.

Police Officer Dylan Morrissey was the first to arrive on scene, and he located the man face down on the floor, unresponsive and without a pulse.

Officer Morrissey immediately began life-saving treatment and continued until the crews of Gloucester Fire Ladder 1 and Rescue 2 arrived. Firefighter/Paramedics Jamie Santos and Jeffrey Budrow, and Firefighter/EMT Wellington Machado took over CPR and initiated advanced life support interventions with assistance from Acting Capt. William Doucette, and Firefighter/EMTs Kyle Benson, Jason Thibodeau, and Charles Scola.

After more than 20 minutes of persistent, advanced life-saving efforts, the victim regained a pulse and was transported to Beverly Hospital for evaluation. He has since recovered and returned home.

“The rapid response, composure under pressure, and commitment to preserving life contributed to a successful resuscitation,” said Fire Chief Eric Smith. “Their actions reflect great credit upon themselves and uphold the highest traditions of the Gloucester Fire Department.”

“Our first responders worked seamlessly to begin life-saving measures immediately, in an emergency where every second matters,” said Interim Police Chief Michael Williams. “The determination, skill and professionalism of those involved in this incident saved a life, and I am pleased to recognize their work.”

“I commend the professionalism, skill, and teamwork demonstrated by our emergency responders during this critical incident,” said Mayor Paul Lundberg. “Their swift, coordinated actions and commitment to preserving life made a profound difference in this outcome. This is a powerful example of the dedication our public safety personnel bring to the community every day. We are deeply grateful for their service and proud of the lifesaving work they performed. The commendations are well deserved.”
