BLACKSTONE — The Blackstone Fire Department extinguished a restaurant cooking fire late Wednesday morning.

Fire Chief Kevin Roy reports that the department was called to Hunan Place, at 3 Main St., at about 11:14 a.m. on Wednesday, April 15.

A passing Blackstone Police patrol unit reported the fire after spotting the smoke while driving by during routine patrol.

Upon arrival, fire crews saw smoke coming from the roof with fire inside the restaurant.

Mutual Aid was provided by the following Fire Departments: Woonsocket (RI), Millville, Bellingham, Mendon, and North Smithfield (RI).

The fire was contained quickly, with no extension into the other units in the commercial plaza. Several stores and the restaurant have closed for cleanup due to smoke damage.

A preliminary Blackstone Fire Department investigation has determined the fire’s origin was accidental and started by cooking at the restaurant.

“A fast-thinking Blackstone Police officer on patrol helped to avert tragedy by quickly reporting this fire before it spread,” said Chief Roy. “We may have a few businesses closed temporarily, but that’s far better than several businesses completely destroyed by flames. I’d also like to send a big thank you to our mutual aid partners — Woonsocket, Millville, Bellingham, Mendon and North Smithfield fire departments — who are always there when we need them.”
