BOSTON — Two decades after billionaire philanthropist Joan Kroc stunned The Salvation Army by donating half of her fortune, The Salvation Army Boston Kroc Center continues to offer affordable “first-class” fitness options and a campus of opportunities in a lower-income area of the city.
The non-profit’s state-of-the-art center now boasts nearly 100,000-square-feet of community recreation space, offering a wide variety of affordable activities and community resources for all ages all under one roof. Community members who want to achieve their personal health or fitness goals in the New Year have access to one of the region’s only indoor rock climbing walls, the largest all-season waterpark in Greater Boston, new pickleball courts for kids and families, an NCAA-size basketball court, and a wide variety of fitness amenities.
Located in the heart of Boston’s Upham’s Corner neighborhood at 650 Dudley St., the Boston Kroc has served thousands of children, adults, and seniors through a wide variety of other programs, including a Culinary Arts job training program, music instruction, afterschool care, and social services.
The facilities are available to anyone from the community.
“The Salvation Army Boston Kroc Center is providing a safe space that allows our members to focus on body, mind, and spirit,” said Major Elvie Carter, Administrator for the Centers. “This where children learn arts, family events are held, seniors come together, and children can play safely and learn as they wait for their parents after school or attend camp. Joan Kroc envisioned a place that was accessible to all and where children from low-income families could come — that dream has come true.”
