NEW LONDON — Superintendent Winfried Feneberg is pleased to announce Kearsarge Regional High School’s January Student of the Month.

Jacob Macnutt, a junior from Newbury, was selected as Student of the Month for his passion and positive attitude that translates into everything he is involved in, both inside and outside of the classroom.

“Whether it’s first thing in the morning as he is walking from the parking lot into the school building, or while he’s working at the local Market Basket, Jacob engages with people in a genuine and positive manner. He puts a smile on my face each morning with his greeting and conversation, and I witness him continue to do the same for others throughout his day,” Assistant Principal Christopher Geraghty said. “Jacob appreciates being challenged academically, seeking to be pushed in his thinking and grow as an individual.”

Most notably, Macnutt has been a member of 1247 Blood, Sweat, and Gears, the school’s FIRST Robotics Team, which he cites as a highlight while at the high school.

“Our Robotics team has been an excellent experience for me. I’ve learned how details matter in organizing complex tasks and materials. I’ve become a sort of  ‘quartermaster’ regarding our resources, tools, and supplies, learning that such a role is just as important as a student that is more focused on the programming and construction of the robot,” Macnutt said. “The friendships I’ve formed mean a lot to me, and working alongside my friends makes the experience feel like our team is a family.”

Christopher Spooner, engineering teacher and FIRST Team advisor, said Macnutt has been an “integral member” of the club and that “he brings a positive attitude and energy” to the team.

Students of the Month are selected by faculty for their positive moral character and contributions to the school community.

Macnutt is also a member of Technical Support Team for the Drama Club. Through Macnutt’s experiences, he has gained a passion for technology that he hopes to expand on in the future.

“Ideally, I would love to eventually start my own business. I’d like to combine my interests in technology and business to possibly look at evaluating companies related to efficient use of resources and how technology may be able to support more efficient practices,” Macnutt said.
