HAMPTON – Superintendent Lois Costa is delighted to share that students in Grades 6-8 are participating in a new program at Hampton Academy where they are producing their own podcasts on a wide range of topics.
Students are able to come up with their own school-related topics and produce the pieces entirely by themselves including writing scripts, conducting interviews, and editing.
Students must use their collaborative, creative, and critical listening skills in order to create their podcasts. By speaking with guests and co-hosts, students develop strong verbal communication skills and strengthen their abilities to connect with one another in the real world. They also gather technical experience by learning to record and edit, gaining valuable life skills that will help them regardless of what career path they choose.
To date, two groups of Grade 7 students have published their podcasts. Episodes include “Get Out: Understanding School Drills,” “Tick Tock: Time Management,” and “All I Want: Middle School Trends.”
As part of their podcasts, students conducted interviews with staff members including School Resource Officer Zachary Terenzoni, Grade 7 Language Arts Teacher Jennifer Nadeau, and Grade 7 Social Studies Teacher Suzanne Frost on what they wanted to receive for the holiday season. SRO Terenzoni was also interviewed about the dangers of social media.
Podcast episodes can be accessed on the Hampton Schools YouTube channel.
The District is looking to expand the program to Centre School and Marston School next year.
