Newport Police Department Arrests and Charges Woman with Grand Larceny

NEWPORT — Chief Travis Bingham reports that the Newport Police Department arrested and charged a woman with grand larceny.  

SHEILA CANTO, AGE 57 of COVENTRY, was arrested and charged with: 

  • Grand Larceny 
  • Operation without Consent of Owner 

On Thursday, Jan. 11 at approximately 6:15 a.m. Newport Police responded to 74 Middle St., for a report of a stolen vehicle.  

Upon arrival officers spoke with a resident who reported their car, a white Toyota Yaris, was stolen while it was warming up outside.  

At 12:18 p.m. an Orleans County Deputy located the white Toyota Yaris traveling on Lower Village Road, in Lowell. The operator of the vehicle was determined to be CANTO.  

CANTO was arrested without incident and transferred to the Newport Police station for booking.  

A preliminary investigation determined that CANTO had approached the victim looking for a ride, and when the victim declined and then went back inside their home, CANTO took the vehicle.  

CANTO was arraigned in Orleans Superior Court and released under the condition she have no contact with the victim.
