NORWOOD — General Manager Tony Mazzuco, Police Chief William Brooks and Fire Chief Timothy Bailey proudly share that the Norwood community recently raised more than $14,000 to support families that were displaced following a multi-family house fire on Thanksgiving.
On Thursday, Nov. 23, at approximately 9:30 p.m., Norwood Police, Norwood Fire Walpole Fire and Westwood Fire responded to multiple reports of a building fire on Saint Joseph Avenue.
Upon arrival, first responders observed heavy fire on the top floor of a three-story wood-frame multi-family home. Norwood Police were the first to arrive on seen and were able to ensure that all occupants were evacuated safely.
Crews worked for over two hours before the fire was placed under control. The home was deemed uninhabitable and as a result, two families, both with school-aged children were displaced.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Norwood Fire Department.
The American Red Cross helped the families to secure temporary housing at a local hotel.
The Town of Norwood, the Norwood Firefighters Union, Norwood Police and Norwood residents helped the families lengthen their stay at the local hotel as they attempt to resettle.
Additionally, a GoFundMe was set up by community member Katie Neil-Rizzo to raise money for the families. To date, the GoFundMe online fundraiser has secured $14,154, which will be used to help purchase food, clothes and lodging.
“With the holidays fast approaching it is heartwarming to see the Norwood community come together to support their neighbors in need,” said General Manager Mazzucco. “This ongoing fundraising effort is a testament to the unity of the Norwood community.”
General Manager Mazzucco would like to thank Norwood Firefighters Local 1631 President Paul Ronco, Norwood Police SRO Geoff Baguma and local business staff who contributed to these efforts.
