With Requests for Assistance on the Rise, Iconic Fundraising Campaign Helps Fill the Gap
HAVERHILL —The Salvation Army’s iconic Red Kettle fundraising campaign launches in just a few weeks and the non-profit organization is calling on the Haverhill community to register to ring this holiday season. More volunteers are needed to help The Salvation Army meet increasing year-round needs across critical Salvation Army programs. This year, The Salvation Army Massachusetts Division hopes to raise close to $2.5 million.
Volunteers are crucial to the success of the campaign across thousands of zip codes nationwide. Every dollar raised through The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign remains in the community where it was given.
“The generosity of our community during the Red Kettle Campaign provides essential funds for The Salvation Army to step in to fill the gap in times of crisis, but we can’t do it alone,” said Major Lynnann Rivers, The Salvation Army in Haverhill. “Many of our neighbors and local community partners have made it a holiday tradition to give their time to help others and we hope that they will step up again.”
Opportunities to ring are available Monday through Saturday during the holiday season, with the most need on Saturdays in November and December.
Individual volunteers are encouraged to sign up for 2-hour shifts. “For every two hours a volunteer spends ringing a bell, their support helps The Salvation Army provide a family with a full meal,” Rivers said. Group volunteers are welcome to register for an entire day and can rotate shifts throughout their time slot. Service and community groups, musicians, students, individuals and families are also welcome.
“The Salvation Army is here, not only at Christmastime, but all year round to help people when times are tough,” Rivers said. “People’s time and donations are bringing hope to our community, as no family should ever have to choose between paying for rent and utilities or putting food on their table.”

With fewer retail stores, coin shortages, and more people shopping online, The Salvation Army is providing those who are unable to ring or give in person an opportunity to give back to their community by registering as Virtual Ringers online by clicking here.
Each year, The Salvation Army will serve more than 25 million people across America – including many here in your community. That means over 55 million meals for the hungry, over 10 million nights of shelter for the homeless, and countless Christmas gifts for children who may otherwise go without.
