NARRAGANSETT — Chief Sean Corrigan is pleased to announce that Officer Kevin O’Connor has been assigned as the department’s new Community Police Officer.
Officer O’Connor has been with the Narragansett Police Department for 13 years, with five of those years serving as part of the Community Police Division. He is the former School Resource Officer at the Pier Middle School. He has also assisted with hiring, training and supervising the department’s Community Service Officers (CSO) for the past five years.
He has been the department’s liaison for the Rhode Island Department of Healthy Aging, the Town Beach Manager and the local Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Awareness (IDEA) Committee, and has built relationships with multiple community organizations.
As part of his new role as a Community Police Officer, O’Connor will investigate nuisance and community civil disputes. He will also liaise with the University of Rhode Island and its University Office of Student Life regarding student and off-campus housing-related offenses during the school year.
Additionally in his new role, Officer O’Connor will conduct tobacco and alcohol compliance checks at local retailers and licensed establishments, as required by state and federal regulations. He will continue to perform liaison duties with the Rhode Island Department of Healthy Aging and attend meetings of local community groups as requested, and will assist with managing the CSO intern program.
“The Community Police Officer role is important to ensuring our department is able to address quality of life issues and effectively deliver services to the larger community,” Chief Corrigan said. “Officer O’Connor has great experience working with community organizations as well as the University of Rhode Island in his time with our Community Police Division, and I’m confident that he is a great fit for this role.”
Officer O’Connor will work alongside Community Housing Officer Larry Eidelman. In his role, Eidelman assists the Narragansett Police Department and Building Inspections Department in the enforcement of Town Ordinances. Eidelman works with property managers, neighborhood associations and residents to enforce Town Ordinances and the Rhode Island Property Maintenance Code, including those related to rental properties and zoning. These may include issues and disputes regarding occupancy, trash, parking, zoning, noise and other quality of life issues.
