MEDFIELD — Superintendent Jeffrey J. Marsden and Thomas Blake Middle School Principal Nathaniel Vaughn are pleased to announce that Medfield’s eighth grade students recently participated in the Statewide Civics Projects Showcase.

The event was held on Friday, June 2 at Clark University in Worcester.

The Civics Project Showcase is put on by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). The statewide showcase gives students grades 8-12 the opportunity to share their work with legislators, subject matter experts, educators and other community members while receiving recognition for their civic engagement.

In total, 11 Blake students worked in three collaborative groups to present projects they’ve worked on throughout the school year. Students were assigned to one of the legislative districts in Massachusetts, researched a topic within that district and created a prospective plan for change. After the students established a plan, they contacted their state representative in an effort to advocate for a positive change.

As part of the showcase students researched the 6th Norfolk District and the 15th Norfolk District. The research topics included: encouraging greater access to technology in public spaces in the 15th Norfolk District, attempting to create a youth outreach program in the 6th Norfolk District and advocating for the banning of alcohol nips (small bottles of alcohol) across Massachusetts.

The 11 Blake students included Abby Fisch, Sofia Varela, Owen Marsette, Luke Heffernan, Chris Unger, Ryan Healey, Liam Curry, Will Sullivan, Audrey Grandinetti, Ella Roeder and Charlie Werner. Blake Middle School teachers Gregory Keohan and John Sullivan also attended the showcase event with the students.

“It’s so wonderful that our students were able to take part in this educational showcase with peers statewide,” said Principal Vaughn. “Our students learned more about issues that affect their community while becoming active and informed members of our society.”
