Town of Acton Announces Return of Adaptive Bicycle Rental Program

ACTON – The Acton Recreation Department is pleased to announce the return of adaptive bicycle rentals this year.

ACTON – The Acton Recreation Department is pleased to announce the return of adaptive bicycle rentals this year.

Adaptive bicycles offer greater stability and support to those who have a range of physical challenges, allowing them to more easily access the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail.

The Town fleet consists of two adult recumbent tricycles, one adult hand-powered cycle, one adult tricycle, one adult side-by-side tricycle, and two children’s tricycles.

This program is free to Acton residents. Non-residents will be charged $5 to offset the cost of bicycle maintenance.

Bicycles may be reserved in two-hour blocks at www.actonrec.com. Follow the prompts to secure the date, time, and the bike you’d prefer.

Bicycles are stored at NARA Park, 25 Ledge Rock Way. Those with reservations are asked to arrive at NARA at least 15 minutes early, speak with the park ranger, and have a photo identification to offer as collateral. Renters may pick up bicycles by checking in with the NARA snack bar attendant. All riders must wear a helmet; patrons are asked to bring their own helmets.

Patrons are asked to bring a cellphone, and to call the NARA office at 978-929-6641 if they need assistance.

Those with questions about the adaptive bicycle program are asked to contact Recreation Director Melissa Settipani-Rufo at recreation@actonma.gov or 978-929-6640, ext. 0.

Bicycles are available through Aug. 27. Those interested in renting a bicycle after this date are asked to contact the Recreation Department.
