NORFOLK — Director Sarah Ward is excited to announce that the Norfolk Public Library will be hosting its open house/summer reading kickoff party this month.

WHEN:

Saturday, June 17 from 10 a.m. to noon

The rain date is scheduled for June 24.

WHERE:

Norfolk Public Library, 2 Liberty Lane

WHAT:

Norfolk Public Library will celebrate the start of its summer reading program with an open house/kickoff party.

The event will feature family fun activities including outdoor yard games, a scavenger hunt, touch-a-truck and more.

Touch-a-truck will take place in the parking lot of the library and will feature cars and trucks from the Police Department, Fire Department and Department of Public Works.

The town hill grass area will host outdoor yard games including giant Connect 4, giant Jenga, Ladder Toss, Cornhole, giant Yahtzee, bocce balls and giant checkers for all to enjoy.

In addition to the outdoor events, the day will feature several indoor activities. Inside the main library, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a scavenger hunt.

As part of the scavenger hunt, participants will try to find different printouts of the library’s bear, Bill Shakesbeare. Each printout will have a letter on it and once all are found participants will then need to unscramble the letters to figure out a secret word. Once they figure out the word, they can turn it in for a small prize of their choice.

The community room will also be transformed into a giant Candy Land game. When attendees enter the room, they will be transported into the game and act as life-size pieces as they travel throughout the board to play the game.

Those participating in summer reading will have the opportunity to pick up their reading supplies or sign up for the program at the event as well. This year’s summer reading theme is “Find the Unexpected at Your Library” and will take place from June 17- Aug. 14. The library will have programming for all ages and throughout the eight weeks of reading registered patrons will have the chance to win prizes and collect beads. Read and Bead is open to all children 12 and under. For every 15 minutes they read, participants earn a bead. The more you read, the cooler the bead!

Light refreshments will be served during the open house event.

The Norfolk Public Library will also be hosting several other exciting and free events for community members this summer. To view a list of all events, click here.
