Norwood Public Schools Appoints Dr. Jose J. Muñoz as Assistant Superintendent of Academics

NORWOOD — Superintendent David Thomson is pleased to announce that the Norwood School Committee voted to appoint Dr. Jose J. Muñoz as the district’s new Assistant Superintendent of Academics earlier this month. 

NORWOOD — Superintendent David Thomson is pleased to announce that the Norwood School Committee voted to appoint Dr. Jose J. Muñoz as the district’s new Assistant Superintendent of Academics earlier this month. 

Assistant Superintendent of Academics Dr. Muñoz was recommended by Superintendent Thomson at the May 3 School Committee meeting. 

Dr. Muñoz currently serves as the Superintendent Resident of Boston Public Schools, where he works to implement school improvement plans across 119 schools and addresses concerns in seven focus areas through the Systemic Improvement Plan Implementation (SIP). While serving in this role, he has supported chief staff with internal operational functions, conducted hiring interviews and onboarding processes and facilitated executive and chief team meetings. 

Additionally, Dr. Muñoz currently serves as an adjunct faculty member at Salem State University where he teaches seminars in educational leadership, culturally responsive leadership for deep change and justice in education.

Since 2021, Dr. Muñoz has served as an undergraduate advisor and proctor at Harvard University where he has accumulated the skills necessary to support students and maintain a safe and livable physical environment. He is also responsible for aligning students with the academic requirements, regulations and policies of the college. Dr. Muñoz is an active member of the Harvard University Advisory Committee, where he serves as a liaison between staff and the residential deans.

“On behalf of the entire district, I am pleased to welcome Assistant Superintendent of Academics Dr. Muñoz to the Norwood Public Schools,” said Superintendent Thomson. “Dr. Muñoz has an impressive background and an evident passion for the field of education. I am confident he brings the skills, qualifications and personality needed to excel in this role.”

He has also previously served as principal of the Nathaniel Bowditch K-8 School and Bates Elementary School, which are part of the Salem Public Schools. During this time, he coordinated and created a system for remote online learning and achieved the highest student growth percentiles in the district in English Language Arts (ELA) and math.

Dr. Muñoz has also previously served as a reading and academic resource coach, a third and fifth-grade teacher and as an education consultant. He has experience and passion for coaching school leaders and fostering student engagement.

Dr. Muñoz holds an associate’s degree from Glendale Community College, a bachelor’s degree in elementary education with an SIE Endorsement from Arizona State University, a master’s degree in school leadership from Harvard University and a doctorate in educational leadership from Harvard University.
