BOURNE – Superintendent Kerri Anne Quinlan-Zhou and BHS Innovation Pathways Coordinator Ann-Marie Strode would like to invite families, parents and members of the Bourne Public Schools community to their first-ever Senior Internship Showcase next week.

BOURNE – Superintendent Kerri Anne Quinlan-Zhou and BHS Innovation Pathways Coordinator Ann-Marie Strode would like to invite families, parents and members of the Bourne Public Schools community to their first-ever Senior Internship Showcase next week.

The event will be held on May 9 at Bourne High School. The public viewing will begin at 5 p.m. and will go until 6:30 p.m.

This is the first cohort of seniors to participate in the Bourne Advantage internship program. A total of 37 seniors have completed their internships making program a success in its first year.

This Showcase event will be to highlight the phenomenal work students have done in their internships this school year and to share what they’ve learned with their families, mentors and community members. Along with being available for questions, the seniors have put together visual presentations to display and highlight the work they’ve done. The presentations include slideshows, artifacts, pictures, documents, and other examples of work from their internships. In addition, a portion of the Senior Internship Showcase will include a “signing” to celebrate those wishing to enter the field of education.

The senior internships are a culmination of a four-year school to career program that begins with a career readiness course for all freshmen at Bourne High School, which serves as a way for students to explore options and get thinking about their futures after high school. Sophomores take a course called the Modern Workplace and juniors then then learn about personal finance and the real-world connections between their education and potential professional careers.

“The Bourne Advantage internship program has been such a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn and grow,” said Superintendent Quinlan-Zhou. “This program allows students to gain valuable experience that will help shape their future career goals and aspirations.”

BHS School to Career/Innovation Pathways Coordinator Ann-Marie Strode, who serves as the freshmen career readiness teacher, meets with juniors every spring to figure out what internships may interest them. She also works with local businesses from the community to see what potential internships they may be able to offer to students.

Some of the businesses and organizations that have contributed to the internship program include Massachusetts Maritime Academy, the Bourne Police Department, CMS Landscaping, Joint Base Cape Cod, and local Veterinary clinics, among several others.

After this year’s success, the internship program will be growing to over 50 students next year.

“I could not be more proud of these students. Any time we can celebrate how amazing they are and show off their hard work, we should. The risks they’ve taken with this program, with it being so new, has really built their confidence and their ability to see themselves beyond high school,” said Strode. “I also want to commend our community partners who worked with us to create this meaningful experience for our students.”
