BOURNE — Superintendent Kerri Anne Quinlan-Zhou is pleased to share that Bourne High School will host New York Times best-selling author/illustrator Jarrett Krosoczka, who will be presenting his memoir.

“I am looking forward to welcoming Jarrett Krosoczka to Bourne High School,” said Superintendent Quinlan-Zhou. “This is a great opportunity for students to listen to and learn from his experiences and allow them to make real-life connections about their own experiences.”

WHERE:

Bourne High School, 75 Waterhouse Road, Bourne, MA.

WHEN:

Friday, April 14

  • Krosoczka Memoir Presentation from 9-10 a.m.
  • Writer’s Workshop from 10:30-11:30 a.m.
  • Illustrator’s Workshop from 1-2 p.m.

WHAT:

Author Jarrett Krosoczka will be presenting his memoir “Hey Kiddo: How I Lost my Mother, Found my Father, and Dealt with Family Addiction,” a National Book Award Finalist, at Bourne High School to a group of eighth and 10th grade students.

His memoir tells the story of Krosoczka’s childhood, living with his grandparents while his mother struggled with substance use disorder and Krosoczka’s journey to find his father.

His memoir ties into the annual Bourne High School Civics Action Project, which focuses on physical, mental and social well-being.

“For the students’ Civics Action Project, many of them chose the topic of substance use disorder, and I believe having Mr. Krosoczka come in and share his story will resonate with them in a meaningful way,” said Bourne Middle School Librarian Sara Riggle. “Not only will they get to hear his story, but they’ll also have the unique opportunity to be able to work with him directly in writing and illustrating workshops on the day of his visit.”

Following Krosoczka’s presentation, students will write a story as a collective group, with Krosoczka orchestrating their creative output, as part of a writer’s workshop. Students will collectively brainstorm and learn about the power of collaboration, focusing largely on the plot. The beginning, middle, and end of the story will be charted out from everyone’s input. Students will discuss what happened to each character and how those events changed their protagonist.

There will also be an illustrators workshop, where Krosoczka will draw for the students and demonstrate easy-to-replicate techniques, such as character expression, perspective, shadow, and gesture. After each drawing demonstration, students will draw their own characters and implement the lessons they just learned. As they draw, Krosoczka will provide encouragement and insight to the students for their work.

Krosoczka, who is the author and illustrator of more than 40 books for young readers,  is also the founder of School Lunch Day Hero, a national campaign that celebrates school lunch staff and the Joseph and Shirley Krosoczka Memorial Youth Scholarships, which funds art classes for underprivileged children living in his hometown, Worcester.

Several of Krosoczka’s books will be available for purchase and signing during the event. Please note that the event is for students only and is not open to the public.
