WOBURN – Principal Linda Riley is pleased to share that Altavesta Elementary School hosted a successful Global Play Day.
On Wednesday, March 1, students at Altavesta elementary participated in a day of indoor and outdoor unstructured play.
Students were allowed to bring in toys, games, blocks or dolls to play with and share with their friends, as well as play with the toys teachers had in the classrooms. No screens were allowed as part of the play day.
Students could also play outside in the snow, where they made snow angels and built snowmen.
Global School Play Day launched in 2015 as a grassroots effort to bring awareness to the importance of regular, unstructured playtime for proper child development. The event came at a time when recess was being cut in schools and students were using electronic devices more than ever.
According to Global School Play Day, unstructured play is essential for early childhood development, as it boosts cognitive development, promotes learning and socialization and helps children become more adaptive to various situations.
“Global School Play Day is such an excellent opportunity for our students to put devices and electronics away and connect with each other in creative and fun ways,” Principal Riley said. “It was great to see the students using their imaginations and playing with board games, dolls and toys that teachers and staff played with when they were younger.”
