SOUTHBRIDGE — Receiver/Superintendent Jeffrey A. Villar and Principal Jeff House are pleased to announce that Southbridge Middle School has opened its first-ever digital music recording studio.

The recording studio – called the Pioneers Studio – became fully operational in January. The space is utilized by general music students for project-based assignments and by concert band students for practice.

The studio features the latest technology in digital music recording, providing students access to practice and record a variety of digital music composition assignments and creative songwriting lessons.

Students collaborate in pairs throughout the week to work on their projects. Teams have recorded audio podcasts, used their own written lyrics to record vocals, and even brought in acoustic instruments, including a Djembe hand drum and guitars, to add instrumentation to their digital tracks.

All projects directly align with the state’s 2019 Arts Curriculum Framework standards. Southbridge Middle School teachers worked to develop an entirely new tiered General Music curriculum this past fall that includes the music studio and digital music technology.

“Student participation in the arts is an important aspect of successful schools.  I am pleased Southbridge Middle School is providing our students rich and engaging musical opportunities,” said Receiver/Superintendent Villar.
