MATTAPOISETT — Superintendent Michael S. Nelson would like to recognize School Resource Officers (SRO) Adalberto “Junior” Cardoso Jr. and Lenira Lima on National SRO Day.

Wednesday, Feb. 15 is National SRO Day and celebrates the officers who bridge the gap between police departments and school districts. An SRO is a full-time law enforcement officer that is trained in school-based, community-oriented policing. SROs serve as protectors, educators and mentors each day.

School Resource Officers provide a valuable service to the school community. At ORRJHS and ORRHS, the officers:

  • Increase safety in the schools and assist in conflict resolution efforts
  • Support arrival and dismissal
  • Attend student events
  • Attend extracurricular activities
  • Foster positive relationships between students and law enforcement, and build working relationships with school staff and parents
  • Help promote a positive school culture

“SROs Cardoso and Lima are both instrumental members of the Old Rochester Regional School District and provide invaluable service to the students, parents and staff members they work with,” Superintendent Nelson said. “I would also like to recognize Mattapoisett Police Officer Ross Lacasse who supports and assists our SROs. We are fortunate to have a great working relationship with the Mattapoisett Police Department, which allows for the SRO program in our junior and senior high schools to continue to thrive.”

Superintendent Nelson also wishes to recognize the Marion and Rochester Police Departments for their partnership and service to the district’s elementary schools.

In December 2022, the Marion Police Department and Sippican School designated a space within the Sippican School as a Marion Police satellite office, which on-duty Marion Police officers can use as a secondary space for administrative police duties. The initiative provides an extra measure of safety and security for students and staff during the school day.
