MEDFIELD — Superintendent Jeffrey Marsden is pleased to share that five Medfield High School students are traveling to compete in DECA’s International Career Development Conference (ICDC) this weekend.

From April 23-26, thousands of high school students from around the U.S., Puerto Rico, Guam, and other countries such as Canada, Spain, and South Korea will attend ICDC in Atlanta, Georgia.

At the conference, students will compete in various roleplay, scenario-based events; written and prepared events; or online events. Dozens of competitive event options are available to students, allowing them to compete within the area of business, marketing, or entrepreneurship they are most interested in. Students then work through their role-play or present their written project in front of judges who are industry professionals.

The Medfield DECA students attending ICDC are:

  • Megan Colleran, junior, competing in Marketing Communications
  • Pranit Shah, junior, competing in Personal Financial Literacy
  • Nina Paguio, sophomore, competing in Principles of Finance
  • Eva LaRowe and Claire Teany, freshmen, competing in Entrepreneurship Team Decision Making

In addition to competition, the students will be able to network with other students with similar interests, visit college- and career-related exhibits, and explore Atlanta.

This is Medfield High School’s third year competing with DECA. Competitions begin at the District level where students compete against students from other high schools in the area. Competitors can then advance to the State level and to the International level.

Of Medfield DECA’s 48 active members, 27 competed at the State Career Development Conference (SCDC). In addition to the five students above, five additional students — seniors Deeya Yadapadithaya, Joseph Nickerson, Aryav Yadapadithaya, Bella Gangemi and Morgan Reilly — qualified for ICDC but are unable to attend.

“We are so excited for our students attending ICDC this year and wish them the best of luck for a safe, enriching competition and global leadership conference!” DECA Adviser Karen Shaffer said. “I would also like to thank Assistant Principal Brenda Hagan and teacherBonnie Wren-Burgess who supported our chapter this year by judging competitive events and chaperoning at SCDC, and Technology Integration SpecialistNeal Sonnenberg, Guidance Counselor Stephanie Worthley, and teacher Kerry Lynch, who supported our students at this year’s District conference.”

DECA is a nonprofit high school business and marketing organization that prepares young leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management. DECA serves both high school and college students with over 152,000 members and 3,400 chapters internationally.
