King Philip Regional Schools To Offer Summer Enrichment Programs for Students

The summer online enrichment program will operate throughout July and allow middle school and high school students the opportunity to take courses in music, art, English, math, dance and technology.

“We are extremely excited to be able to offer this summer enrichment program for our students in wake of camp closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Assistant Superintendent Gilson. “We hope that these courses provide a summer camp feeling from the comfort of their homes.”

The program will consist of four week-long sessions that will be offered Monday through Friday beginning Monday, July 6. 

  • Session One: Monday, July 6 through Friday, July 10
  • Session Two: Monday, July 13 through Friday, July 17
  • Session Three: Monday, July 20 through Friday, July 24
  • Session Four: Monday, July 27 through Friday, July 31

Students may register for courses on Family ID (www.familyid.com) with the exception of Session Four APPS for Inventors and Interactive Circuits where specific registration links have been provided below. Once an account is created on Family ID it can be used to register for programs in King Philip Regional School District in the future.

Payments should be made via credit card using the online payment link attached to each course in Family ID. All courses cost $70 with the exception of the APPS for Inventors and Interactive Circuits courses. Costs for the APPS for Inventors and Interactive Circuits courses are listed below. Refunds cannot be given after the Thursday prior to the course start date.

Courses will run if there are at least six students enrolled. If courses do not run because of low enrollment, students will be notified through email the Friday before the class is expected to begin and a refund will be provided.  

Students taking courses must have access to a computer and an internet connection to get into google meetups, Zoom for course instruction and an email to receive communication from the instructor as well as password codes for class meetups. Other basic materials such as a pencil and paper may be needed as well.

Students may choose one or more courses to add to their morning and/or afternoon routine. 

Session One

Drawing with Anime 
Instructor: Teresa Schwarz 
Students: Grades 6-9
Time: 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m

In this remote creative-learning course, students will spend one hour each day learning how to draw Anime/Manga style cartoon figures. With the help of the instructor, students will learn how to draw the basics of Anime/Manga through engaging, step-by-step video lessons. These beginner-level classes will introduce you to some drawing techniques that will help you to become more comfortable with a pencil.

Creative Writing: Finding your voice in print
Instructor: Sarah Bond
Students: Grades 6-9
Time: 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Creative writing is more than just storytelling; it is the ability to see the world in new and interesting ways and then share what you see with others, using your own unique voice. This online camp will be interactive, engaging, and practical, as we learn together how to play with words in order to make our voices heard!  

Beyond Beethoven’s 5th; Enjoying the Symphony Orchestra!
Instructor: Andy Grover 
Students: MS and HS students
Time: 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Beyond Beethoven’s 5th is a music appreciation and music history course that introduces students to some of the major symphonies between the time of Mozart and the 20th century. The course will meet for one hour each day and roughly follow a historic progression. Students will listen to small selections of several pieces. 

Session Two

Interactive Games for ELA and Beyond
Instructor: Melinda Parker
Students: Grades 6-9
Time: 9:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.

Using Nearpod, Flocabulary, and Peardeck interactive platforms, students will be presented with a variety of activities to increase engagement and enrichment in language arts. Students will take part in a variety of skills presented in a new game format each day! Interactive lessons through Google Meet will keep the content new and exciting. 

Javascript Programming Express
Instructor: Matthew Gorr
Students: Grades 6-9
Time: 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

This Javascript programming class will introduce a programmable virtual dog, and explain basic progrAMming concepts on day one. Students will focus on creating functions, Top Down Decomposition, repeated actions and decision making with loops and if statements for the class and decision making.

Virtual Voice and Video
Instructor: Ashley Nelson
Students: Grades 6-11
Time: 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Students will learn an acappella arrangement of a popular song and star in their own virtual choir music video! Students will be provided part recordings, sheet music, and recording instructions at the start of the week. Zoom time will be used to socialize, rehearse, and learn about voice and video recording techniques.

Session Three

Cryptology
Instructor: Shawn Geary
Students: Grades 6-11
Time: 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.  

Do you think someday you might want to learn computer programming to help you crack secret messages? Learning to crack codes builds problem solving skills, creativity, and flexibility. In this course, you will have fun playing with numbers to solve problems.

Broadway Dance
Instructor: Lauren Duffy
Students: Grades 6-11
Time: 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Drama students across all ages love learning and memorizing dances to their favorite Broadway songs. Students will learn choreography to Broadway show-stoppers and practice it. Get ready to dance learning choreography to songs from popular Broadway shows such as Hairspray, A Chorus Line, and Newsies.

Creative Coding in ELA
Instructor: Melinda Parker
Students: Grades 6-9
Time: 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. 

In this interactive offering, students will learn or enhance their ELA and tech skills including Scratch to create a book, movie, comic, or anime review or PMV (Picture Music Video). Students will watch how-to demos, see actual work from young coders, and walk through what they need to know to capture just the right images and sounds to help express themselves!

Javascript Programming Express

Students: Grades 6-9
Time: 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Instructor: Lauren Duffy
Students: Students who completed Grade 8
Time: 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Ms. Duffy, theater and English teacher, will bring this story to life by talking about the plot, characters, themes and symbols, all while making predictions and discussing the many twists and turns. It will be a great preparation for students going from eighth grade into high school next fall!

Artist Bootcamp
Instructor: Ari Barrett
Students: 6 -9
Time: 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Join Ms. Barrett for a fun and intensive artist experience! Daily meetings will include drawing games, intense challenges, and technique training. Prepare to be amazed by introductions to the coolest artists working in the art world today!

Session Four

APPS Inventor
These classes were created in partnership with Mr. Jake Weisberg, Owner of Circuit.Com.
Students: Grades 6 -9
Time: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Price: $104 class fee plus optional tablet rental

*You will need a phone or tablet running Andriod OS to test the apps you build in App Inventors. You can supply your own, or rent one from Circut-lab.com.*

The class will dive into the world of electronics and circuitry, working with sensors, wireless communication, and computer programming using Arduino microcontrollers, MIT App Inventor Software, and the Scratch programming language. Each class day gives participants the chance to design a hands-on project with the guidance of Circuit Lab instructors.

Interactive Circuitry Online
These classes were created in partnership with Mr. Jake Weisberg, Owner of Circuit.Com.
Students: Grades 6 – 9
Time: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Price: $114 class fee plus optional tablet rental

Students will use Arduino microcontroller boards to build interactive hardware devices and learn about computers and coding. Our hands-on projects will range from LED light shows to digital dice to touchless musical instruments, all in the name of taking ideas and making them real. Participants have access to a comprehensive library of parts and equipment, and experienced instructors who can help them create devices of their dreams!
