RAYMOND, N.H. — Superintendent Tina McCoy and Principal Laura Yacek are pleased to report that students at the Lamprey River Elementary School took part in a virtual field day on Wednesday, May 20.
Physical education teacher Louis Faulkner identified 15 activities that students could do alone, with siblings, or as a family from their homes. Staff at LRES made demonstration videos for each event that was then uploaded on Faulkner’s Google Classroom page.
A scorecard was available for students and families to complete as they tried the different events.
“Field Day has always been a yearly springtime event at Lamprey River Elementary School. Mr. Faulkner spends weeks prior planning events, organizing stations and assigning staff to different activities,” Principal Yacek said. “Families join us and it usually includes picnic lunches on the school lawn. This year, we wanted to keep the tradition alive the best way we knew how, with remote learning in place.”
A common phrase being used in schools across the country amidst the COVID-19 pandemic is, “Field Day must go on!” Schools nationwide have been participating in virtual field days while schools remain closed.
The Online Physical Education Network (OPEN) organized the nationwide virtual events. The group supplied many of the games, score sheets and content for free to assist schools in keeping their Field Day programs going.
“I want to thank the entire LRES staff for jumping on board and making this special day happen for our students,” Principal Yacek said. “I am so happy and proud of the Raymond community for embracing this day and creating special long-lasting memories for our children.”
A large number of LRES families took part in the event, and some even hosted field day barbecue parties on their blocks with other friends and families, while adhering to proper social distancing guidelines.
“This turned out to be a terrific event for the entire school community, and we are glad the weather was beautiful as well,” Superintendent McCoy said. “More than 100 families took part, sharing pictures and videos on Google Classroom. This was a perfect opportunity for us to use remote learning as a way to bring everyone together.”
