NEWBURYPORT — Fire Chief Christopher LeClaire and City Marshal Mark Murray report that the Newburyport Fire and Police Departments responded Thursday morning to a crash involving a car and a tractor trailer.
At approximately 10:10 a.m., a Ford F-250 pickup truck was traveling east on High Street when the 31-year-old Newburyport man driving the truck was distracted by his dog in the front seat, causing him to drift into the westbound lane. The Ford F-250 pickup truck collided with a tractor trailer carrying an excavator on a flatbed trailer traveling in the westbound lane.
The left front wheel of the pickup was ripped off the truck, and first set of wheels after the driver’s door of the tractor trailer unit were pushed back and out of alignment as a result of the crash.
Both the driver and a child in the pickup were treated for injuries at the scene.
The dog fled from the scene of crash, but rescued a short time later by the Newburyport Police Animal Control officer. The dog was not injured.
The driver of the tractor trailer, a 57-year-old Holland man, was uninjured.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene. A portion of High Street was closed while the investigation occurred and reopened around 11:30 a.m.
The incident was ruled accidental and no charges will be filed.
