MEDWAY — Principal Dr. John Murray is pleased to announce that 18 Medway High School students who participated in the National Latin Exam (NLE) this year received top recognition for their achievements.

The NLE is sponsored by the American Classical League and the National Junior Classical League and includes questions on grammar, comprehension, history and oral Latin.

The exams were administered March 4 through March 11 during the school day before the school closed in the wake of COVID-19. Each test consisted of 40 multiple choice questions and students had 40 minutes to complete the test. Students took Latin I through IV dependent on their grade level.

Participation in the NLE is voluntary among high school students. The NLE is an opportunity for students studying Latin to receive reinforcement and recognition for their accomplishments in the classroom.

Approximately half of Medway’s Latin students chose to participate in the exam this year. To prepare for the test, Latin teacher Dora Avellino-Chan incorporated NLE topics into the Latin curriculum, shared resources with participating students via Google Classroom and hosted study groups outside of class time in the weeks before the exam.

For the NLE, students are presented with gold, silver, bronze and honorable mention awards based on their scores. Additionally, Medway recognized top scorers for each level of the exam.

Latin I

  • Gold medal and Summa Cum Laude (first place winner): Gustavo Mercier
  • Silver medal and Maxima Cum Laude (second place winners): Maeve Richardson, Camryn Raymond, Ella Barucci, Haley Garvin and Alaina Zambrowski
  • Magna Cum laude (third place winners): Katherine Ball, Olivia Cardillo, Cayla McGonigle, Mather Williamson, Erin Shipos, Caitlin Nolan and Jaeda Gorman
  • Cum Laude (fourth place winners): Michael McNeil and Ian Tomarakos

Latin II

  • Silver medal and Maxima Cum Laude (second place winner): Chloe Redfield
  • Cum Laude (fourth place winner): Laci Santos

“We are extremely proud of our students’ hard work and determination,” said Avellino-Chan. “Receiving top recognition in the National Latin Exam is extremely notable in the Latin teaching world. These students now have an impressive accolade to include on their high school transcripts when applying to colleges.”
